"On the evening of the 6th March 1897, in the Union Hotel, Cockburn street, Edinburgh (not now in existence) there met some 19 ladies and 20 gentlemen who formed themselves into the Southern Light Opera Company"

The above quotation is the first entry in the original minute book written towards the end of the 19th Century.  This is how Edinburgh's oldest amateur operatic society was founded.

Our name ,"The Southern Light Opera Company", was derived from the fact that the majority of the Founder Members lived on the south side of the city of Edinburgh and, of course, wanted to perform light opera.

Charities:

A minimum of 50% of all production profits is donated to local charities, with total donations now in excess of £50,000.  A bucket shake at the end of performances of "Anything Goes" resulted in a total of £852.71 raised for the Mercy Corps / Evening News Tsunami appeal.

Publications:

In 1997 the SLO celebrated its Centenary, and a book chronicling the history of the Company was published.  Entitled 'More a Way of Life' it consists of almost 200 pages including illustrations and is available at £6 including postage from:       David McBain.  Cheques should be made payable to Southern Light Opera.

Drama:

Southern Light Drama is a self supporting subsidiary with its own independent administration which produces plays annually in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
